Boh Sencha Green Tea Review

Boh Sencha Green Tea has the umami flavors of Japan

Boh Sencha Green Tea is a blend of Japanese Sencha and Matcha, specifically from the Uji region. The Uji region in Japan is famous for its tea, producing the finest green tea and matcha for over 800 years.

I love Japanese green tea and the packaging looked so pretty, that I was very excited to try the Boh Green Tea. And it did not disappoint.

Brewing Conditions:

I rinsed my teaware with hot water first. Next, I steeped a single tea bag of Boh Sencha Green Tea in approximately 120 ml of water (~80 degrees Celcius) for 3 minutes in a mini teapot.

Brewing the tea in a small volume of water in a compact vessel really locked in the aroma and flavors of the tea. However, if you don’t have access to a small teapot, you can use a small cup or bowl. Don’t forget the lid!

One really important thing about brewing green tea is you don’t want the temperature to be 100 degrees Celcius. This makes the tea very bitter.

I like to brew my green tea at 80 degrees Celcius to bring out those earthy flavors minus the bitter notes.

I use a thermometer for this. However, if you don’t have one, just boil the water and wait 5-7 minutes before brewing your tea.

Aroma (4.5/5):

The aroma of the green tea was really good. As soon as I tore open the teabag, I could smell the sweet and savory notes of the sencha and matcha blend.

Taste (3.5/5):

When I made the tea using a small volume of water in the mini teapot, it was very flavorsome. I could really taste the soothing, umami notes that make Japanese green tea so good.

But when I tried making the tea in a regular cup following the instructions on their packaging, it was not as flavorful.

Also, while the tea tasted great with the initial notes, I will mention that the aftertaste just didn’t quite hit the spot. Ever since I’ve tried the OSK and Harada brands, it’s just difficult to find something else that compares.

But don’t get me wrong. It still tasted better than a lot of green tea teabags I’ve tried, most of which somehow always end up disappointing and can’t capture the true essence of green tea.

Packaging (4/5):

Beautiful Design

The Boh Sencha Green Tea packaging is very beautiful and illustrates its Japanese origin with a cherry blossom tree and the iconic Mount Fuji on the box.

What I really liked about the packaging is that each tea bag is individually wrapped in aluminum foil. So you don’t have to worry about the tea losing its flavor once you open the box.

Eco-Friendly Packaging

Boh’s website says that the paper for their boxes is FSC-certified, meaning it comes from forests that are managed responsibly and sustainably.

Boh also says their tea bag filters are biodegradable, and their sachets are recyclable because they are made of polypropylene (PP). Although PP is recyclable, it is not biodegradable.

However, PP is better for the environment than other plastics. It takes about 20-30 years to break down and doesn’t release harmful chemicals when recycled.

Sourcing

While Boh’s packaging and website both mention that the matcha was sourced from the Uji region, there wasn’t any information on the individual Japanese farmers from whom the tea was sourced.

Value for Money (4/5):

Now the Boh Global Website is selling a box of 20 Boh Sencha Green Tea bags for USD 3.5. But with shipping and handling, the prices come up a lot. Unfortunately, Boh USA is under maintenance at the time of writing this article.

However, you will get pretty good deals on Amazon with 3 boxes at USD 21.99.

Caffeine Level: Medium

The Boh Sencha Green Tea is definitely an energizing drink without causing jitters.

Food Pairings:

The Boh Sencha Green Tea’s umami flavors would be complemented by something sweet but not overwhelmingly so. It would pair great with milk-based sweets or a light cake.

About Boh: The Malaysian Tea Connection

Boh is a Malaysian company that grows tea in the Cameron Highlands, one of the most beautiful tea plantations in the world. Archibald Russell founded the company in 1929.

Since then, the company has faced many global political and economic challenges. Despite this, Boh has grown to over 8,000 acres, making it one of the largest tea plantations in Southeast Asia.

Recently, Boh has taken steps to make its tea production more sustainable. They have reduced their plastic use, and the plastic they use (PP) is less harmful to the environment than other types. However, they haven’t completely eliminated plastic yet.

Where to Buy: Finding the Best Deal on Boh Sencha Green Tea

For the best value for your money, Amazon is your best bet, although availability can vary.
